Dear Prospective Student,

Welcome to Charleston Collegiate School. During your academic experience, you will grow and change more quickly than at almost any other time in your life. As you develop independence and establish your own convictions, you will test yourself physically, intellectually, and spiritually. We hope to be a part of your life by offering a unique educational environment.

Charleston Collegiate is dedicated to serving a cross-section of our community and to helping families meet the cost of private education. We believe that independent education must continue to foster diversity in its school population; we believe in a multicultural and multiracial environment; and we believe that learning involves differences and diversity. We are dedicated to offering a financial aid program that makes it possible for deserving students, who otherwise would be unable to attend, to be members of our school community. You should not be discouraged from applying because of the cost of attending Charleston Collegiate. Each year, approximately 25% of our students receive financial assistance.

We are excited about the possibilities that our school offers to the low country communities. The founders of this school had a vision for good education for the residents of Johns Island and for their children in generations to follow. The wisdom of this group has placed the school in a position to continue to grow and develop as educational needs in this country change. You will face remarkable challenges from the entire world as you pass from your early learning experiences to young adulthood. We want to help you meet this challenge.

When you consider where you want to be for the next four or twelve years, we urge you to consider Charleston Collegiate. We are confident that the educational experience you will have here will prepare you for coping with the challenges of the twenty-first century. As a graduate of Charleston Collegiate, we hope you will see yourself as a successful student of life, prepared to take on the exciting opportunities that await you.

Charleston Collegiate - An Overview

Nestled under grand, moss-laden live oaks, Charleston Collegiate School offers a thirty acre campus of vast playing fields and wooded trails. Located only twenty minutes from Charleston’s sophisticated historic district on one side and Kiawah Island on the other, the school stands in the middle of the rural beauty of Johns Island. Originally called Sea Island Academy, the school was founded in 1970 to serve local families who valued quality education. As the school grew, a decision was made to focus its energies on a more rigorous, college-oriented curriculum, and in 2002, it was renamed the Charleston Collegiate School. Because of its unique location and its far more diversified population, Charleston Collegiate attracts students from far-reaching areas such as Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, Sullivan’s Island, the Isle of Palms, and Summerville.

The Charleston Collegiate environment values creativity, compassion for others, a passion for learning, and vibrant diversity. Charleston Collegiate School is a nonsectarian, independent school organized as a Lower School (K-5), Middle School (6-8), and Upper School (9-12). It offers a traditional liberal arts curriculum and seeks to develop students academically, athletically, and artistically is the only co-educational, non-sectarian, pre-school through twelfth-grade, independent school in the metropolitan area. This distinction has allowed the school to be far more diverse, with a minority enrollment of almost 20%. CCS is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA). The School is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Palmetto Association of Independent Schools (PAIS), the National Center for Independent School Renewal (NCISR), and the Education Records Bureau.

In addition to a core of remarkably talented, seasoned teachers, the predominantly young faculty at Charleston Collegiate School reflects a dedication to the idea of developing an extraordinary academic environment, sensitive to future needs. Almost seventy five per cent of our faculty have Masters Degrees or PhDs. There is a healthy range in age and experience; most teachers are 25-35 years old and bring strong teaching experience.
