CCS Students Volunteer at Pet Helpers

Thirteen Upper School students spent Saturday morning, November 15th, at Pet Helpers cleaning cages, emptying litter boxes, scrubbing rooms, walking dogs, and visiting with the cats and kittens. Ms. Pendleton, Ms. Venables, and Upper School parent Mary Chase accompanied the students. Their visit followed a special school presentation the day before by Pet Helpers’ Operations Manager Kristin Kifer, who spoke with the students about the plight of homeless animals in the area.

Pet Helpers, a no-kill shelter on James Island which houses nearly 300 pets, is always in need of volunteers. With the current downturn in the economy (meaning more pets are being dropped off at the shelter and fewer people have time to volunteer), the need is more urgent than ever. Charleston Collegiate students were more than happy to help out and plan to return to volunteer again in the new year.

Students to Participate in CCS Renaissance Fair
CCS will hold its first Renaissance Fair from 12-3pm on Friday, November 21st. Students in all grade levels will be divided into ten teams with approximately 25 students per team representing all grade levels. The teams will compete in a series of Medieval- and Renaissance-inspired contests -- such as a mural-painting contest, the da Vinci flying machine contest, the catapult contest, jousting, archery, and possibly even Wizard's Chess. A faculty court (king, queen, etc.) will serve as judges for some of the events. There will be entertainment provided by students in chorus and drama. In addition, tents will be set up by the football field for demonstrations of pottery, carving, iron work, a ferrier, mask making, shoe decoration, and more. Awards and prizes will be given out at the end of the day.

Faculty Spotlight: Mrs. Kujawski

Jill Kujawski -- or Mrs. "K", as she is affectionately known by students in the Lower School -- has been at CCS for four years. During that time she has created and organized a meaningful Character Education program and devoted countless hours to the Academic Achievement Program. She has also been a wonderful resource for individual counseling when kids need the extra time to deal with issues they may confront at home or at school. She says that she has loved working with all students, and that the opportunity to get to know some of them on a very personal level -- helping them have a positive, rewarding experience at school -- has been uplifting.

Despite her diminutive stature and quiet, gentle demeanor, there is a steady strength when Mrs. K attacks a problem. She seems ready to face whatever challenges that present themselves, but she laughingly admits that there has been one surprise in the last couple years. "I became a mommy a year and a half ago, and my new role has given me a whole different perspective when I'm dealing with parents. I think it's made me a better counselor."

"One Warm Coat" Drive at CCS

Baby, It's (Getting) Cold Outside!

As the holidays and cold weather approach, Charleston Collegiate is extending a warm hand to our neighbors by holding a "One Warm Coat" drive from November 5 through November 25. We are asking CCS families to look in their closets for any gently used coats that family members may have outgrown or no longer need. Children's, women's, and men's coats are all welcome! The coats will be donated to Our Lady of Mercy Outreach Services which serves families here on John's Island.

There will be a drop-off box located in the Lower, Middle, and Upper School buildings. If you have a coat to donate, please ask your child to put it in the box or give it to the greeters at morning drop-off. Thank you!

Faculty Spotlight: Mrs. Stewart

Beware of 8th graders carrying movie cameras around campus! They may request an interview with you and ask tough questions about current events. They are the next generation of investigative reporters inspired by Jenni Stewart's latest history/current events project. The students filmed campaign commercials for both John McCain and Barack Obama and served as Middle School leaders for the school's mock election which was held on November 3. "This project was so beneficial because it allowed the students to develop a political interest before they are even qualified to vote. Hopefully, they will remember the project when they get to vote, and they then will make the choice to exercise their Constitutional right and privilege."

Mrs. Stewart has lived in Charleston her entire life. She graduated from Ashley Hall, earned a degree in history at the College of Charleston, and then received a Masters from the Citadel. This is her 9th year teaching at CCS. She taught Upper School history for 6 years and now teaches Middle School, perhaps in preparation for her precious son, who is in our preschool. Like all our teachers, Mrs. Stewart carries a very heavy load in terms of preparation and grading. She teaches 6th and 7th grade American history; current events in the 8th grade; and American history in the 11th grade. We look forward to her being here when Paul Booker enters Middle School!
