Faculty Biographies Kathleen Adriaanse [E-mail] 1st Grade Teacher Appointed in 2005 Born and raised in South Africa, Ms. Adriaanse taught for 14 years at Merrydale Primary School in Africa, and for two years for Charleston County School District. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from University of Western Cape. Elizabeth Boyd [E-mail] Upper School Head Appointed in 2001 Mrs. Boyd received a Master of Arts Degree in English from The Citadel and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Furman University, where she was a Southern Conference singles finalist and team championship winner in tennis. Her experience prior to coming to CCS full-time includes serving as a pro tennis instructor at Kiawah and substitute teaching at local private schools including Ashley Hall, First Baptist, and (formerly) Sea Island Academy. Hacker Burr [E-mail] Director of Admission; Middle School Head; JV Football Coach Appointed in 2002 In addition to his duties as Director of Admission, Mr. Burr has assumed duties as Head of the Middle School, and he teaches 8th grade English. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Roanoke College and a Master of Arts Degree from The Citadel. Manuel Castro [E-mail] Upper School Spanish Teacher Appointed in 2007 Mr. Castro received his Master of Arts in Voice & Music History from the University of Pittsburg in 1983 and his Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Costa Rica in 1975. He has been teaching since 1973 and was most recently teaching Music courses at the University of Costa Rica. Marisol Castro [E-mail] Lower & Upper School Spanish Teacher Appointed in 2005 Before joining Charleston Collegiate full-time, Ms. Castro taught LS Spanish part-time and worked in the Learning Center part-time. Born in Costa Rica, Ms. Castro is fluent in Spanish and English. She is working on a Master of Education Degree in Language Education from the College of Charleston and has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Western Carolina University. Anne Cleveland [E-mail] Associate Head for Advancement; 8th Grade English Teacher Appointed in 2006 Mrs. Cleveland is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Smith College in Northampton, MA, where she received a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in history in 1972. She taught high school history before assuming the position of Head of Residence at St. Anne’s School in Charlottesville, VA. In 1993 she began teaching 7th grade Language Arts and 7th and 8th grade history at Charleston Day School and also served as Academic Dean from 2003 until she came to CCS in the fall of 2006 to help with Development. Patricia Conroy [E-mail] 4th Grade Teacher Appointed in 2007 Ms. Conroy received her Master’s Degree in Childhood Education from New York University in 2004 and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology and Political Science from Presbyterian College in 1997, where she graduated Cum Laude. Her previous employment was as a 4th grade Associate Teacher at the Little Red School House and as a Lower School Admissions Associate at the Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School in New York City. She has been teaching since 2003. Victoria Dobson [E-mail] Director of Student Services Appointed in 1999 Ms. Dobson received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Behavioral Science from High Point University and a Masters of Education in Secondary Counseling from The Citadel. Before joining CCS full-time in 1999, Ms. Dobson also served as a substitute teacher starting in 1996. She has taught at several schools in Illinois and worked as a therapist and Educational Development Specialist in North Carolina. Heidi Doyle [E-mail] Learning Center Teacher (Middle School) Appointed in 2006 Mrs. Doyle joined the Learning Center as the Middle School Coordinator. She is certified in Learning Disabilities and Emotional Disabilities. Ms. Doyle came to Charleston Collegiate from Charlestowne Academy, where she was a Resource Teacher for 2nd, 6th, and 7th grades. Ms. Doyle holds a Master of Science in Education from College of St. Rose in Albany, NY, and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the College of Charleston. Sara Easterlin [E-mail] Preschool Aide; 5th Grade Substitute Teacher Appointed in 2007 Ms. Easterlin graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of Charleston. Her experience prior to joining CCS includes teaching as a substitute in the Charleston County Public School District, as well as serving as a student teacher at Harbor View Elementary. Esta Farmer [E-mail] Lower School Head, Lower School Learning Center Appointed in 2006 Mrs. Farmer joined CCS as the Upper School Coordinator in the Learning Center. She came to CCS from Trident Academy, where she taught English, world geography, psychology, and U.S. history. She also has experience at The Asheville School, Ashley Hall, and Charles Towne Montessori School. Mrs. Farmer holds a Master in Education degree from Xavier University, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati. Laura Garland [E-mail] Upper School Science Teacher Appointed in 2005 For six years, Dr. Garland taught Mathematics and Physics for the U.S. Navy. She holds a Doctorate of Philosophy (with Honors) in Earth and Planetary Sciences and a Masters of Arts in Teaching for Sciences and Mathematics for grades 7-12 from Washington University, as well as a Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude, in Engineering Physics and Mathematics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She is certified to teach physics, mathematics, and general science. Jay Godbolt [E-mail] Athletic Director; Boys’ Basketball (Varsity & JV) Coach; Maintenance Appointed in 2000 After spending 13 years in the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Godbolt brought his excellent training and discipline to the CCS athletic department. He coached basketball and football before becoming Athletic Director for the school. He is currently working on his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Management through American Military University. Marquel Gower [E-mail] Upper School English; Girls’ JV Basketball Coach; Girls’ & Boys’ Tennis Coach Appointed in 2006 Mr. Gower teaches Upper School English, coaches Boys’ Tennis, and assists in Girls’ Tennis. He was an Adjunct English Professor at Trident Technical College for three years. He earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from The Citadel and a Bachelor of Arts in Professional English from South Carolina State University. Mr. Gower has moved from his position in the Middle School to assume teaching duties in the Upper School. Jodie Haynie [E-mail] Preschool Teacher Appointed in 2007 Mrs. Haynie received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Arts from the College of Charleston and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Psychology from University of Colorado Denver. Her diverse teaching background includes work at Our Lady of Mercy Outreach Services here on John’s Island; Eckerd Youth Alternatives, a residential camp setting for ‘at risk’ teens; The Boulder Journey School in Colorado; and teaching English at a university in Mazatlan, Mexico. Mandy Hoskins [E-mail] Middle School Spanish Teacher; Yearbook Advisor Appointed in 2007 Ms. Hoskins received her Master of Education in Spanish from the College of Charleston in 2007 and her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish at Appalachian State University and the College of Charleston in 2003. She was previously employed at the Children’s Garden School on Sullivan’s Island as a Lead Teacher. Rebecca Jackson [E-mail] Learning Center Teacher (Upper School) Appointed in 2007 Mrs. Jackson received her Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis from Richardson University in 2006 and her Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Studies from George Mason University in 1999. She has more than 10 years experience in the Human Services Field and has been a Certified Child Care Trainer since 2003 and a Board Certified Associate Behavioral Analyst since 2002. She is the owner of -- and a Behavior Consultant at -- High Tide Behavioral Techniques on John’s Island. Rebecca Knox [E-mail] Music Teacher; Volleyball Coach Appointed in 2005 Ms. Knox received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Voice Performance from the University of Texas and a Master of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has performed in numerous operas, musicals, and concerts as a soprano, and was a participant in the Austin Lyric Opera Young Artist Program. Jill Kujawski [E-mail] Guidance Counselor Appointed in 2005 Mrs. Kujawski started at CCS as a Learning Center teacher and an Associate Teacher for the 5th Grade, as well as a Varsity Volleyball and Soccer coach. For four years, she worked at Life Management Center where she developed interactive, multi-sensory, hands-on lesson plans for children with learning differences and ran the Wilson reading program. Mrs. Kujawski earned a Masters of Education in School Counseling from The Citadel, and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Florida. She has taken additional counseling coursework through Coastal Carolina to pursue getting her Licensure as a Professional Private Counselor. Ed Lenahan [E-mail] Upper School Humanities & English Teacher Appointed in 2007 Mr. Lenahan received his Master of Arts in English Literature from the College of Charleston in 2006 and his Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature and Creative Writing from Lake Forest College, IL in 2000. His previous experience includes positions as Head Tutor at The Citadel, English Literature Instructor at Trident Technical College, and as a Graduate Assistant at the College of Charleston. He is also a local freelance automotive journalist and graphic artist. Brian McDermott [E-mail] Upper School Humanities & Speech; Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach; Soccer Coach Appointed in 2006 Mr. McDermott teaches Upper School humanities and coaches Girls’ Varsity Basketball and Varsity Soccer. He came from First Baptist Church School of Mt. Pleasant where he was the Head Varsity Basketball and Soccer Coach. Mr. McDermott earned a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication and English from Charleston Southern University. Randy Neale [E-mail] Director of Fine Arts Appointed in 2000 Mr. Neale received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Northern Michigan University. Will O’Donnell [E-mail] Lower School Arts Teacher; Upper School Graphic Arts Teacher; Varsity Football Coach Appointed in 2005 After successful years teaching 4th grade, Mr. O’Donnell is showcasing his artistic talents by devoting his energies to the Fine Arts Department. He is a Cum Laude graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sequential Art. Molly Olson [E-mail] Upper School Science Teacher Appointed in 2005 Mrs. Olson teaches Upper School Biology. She came to Charleston Collegiate from the Sewee Association, where she was the Education Specialist and developed and taught science-based programs. She has a Masters of Art in Education with an emphasis in Science from The Citadel, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Richmond. Katherine Peacock [E-mail] 2nd Grade Teacher; Cheerleading Coach Appointed in 2005 Ms. Peacock received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston, and a Master of Education Degree as a Reading Specialist from The Citadel. Before coming to CCS, Ms. Peacock was a Reading Tutor and the Wilson Language Program Coordinator at the LifeManagement Center in Charleston. Jean Pendleton [E-mail] Technology Director; Upper School Applied Technology Teacher Appointed in 2006 Ms. Pendleton is the Director of Technology. She came to Charleston Collegiate from Norfolk, VA, where she was the Director of Academic Technology, working with teachers in all grades and subject areas on integrating technology into the curriculum. She has also been the Technology Director at Fay School, in Southborough, MA; Brookline Public Schools, in Brookline, MA; and Brimmer and May School, in Chestnut Hill, MA. She earned a Masters in Education in Computers in Education from Lesley University, a Bachelor of Arts in American Civilization from Brown University, and a Graphic Design Certificate from Massachusetts College of Art. Rives Poe [E-mail] Middle School Math Teacher Appointed in 2007 Ms. Poe received her Master of Arts in Secondary Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia in 2004 and her Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from Southern Methodist University in Texas in 1999. She was a Mathematics Teacher at Bishop England High School from 2004 until joining Charleston Collegiate this year. She also taught Sixth Grade Math at The Galloway School in Atlanta, and has been teaching since 2000. Virginia Reed [E-mail] 5th Grade Teacher Appointed in 2003 Mrs. Reed received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston. She previously taught at the 6th and 8th grade levels at Oakbrook Middle School in Ladson. She was also a tutor at the LifeManagement Center in Charleston. Ms. Reed is currently on maternity leave. Jamey Rock [E-mail] Middle School Science Teacher Appointed in 2007 Mr. Rock earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Hampden-Sydney College. He previously served as a substitute teacher and assistant basketball coach in the Guilford County School system of North Carolina. Mr. Rock has traveled to several countries and once ran a half-marathon on the Great Wall of China. Kim Rogers [E-mail] Kindergarten Teacher Appointed in 1999 Mrs. Rogers received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Indiana University. Her previous experiences included serving as a kindergarten teacher at the Carousel Learning Center in West Ashley and teaching the 4th grade in Monongahela, Pennsylvania. Ms. Rogers has been teaching since 1990. Richard Rouse [E-mail] Upper School Math Teacher Appointed in 2006 Mr. Rouse received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of Charleston. Mimi Seyfert [E-mail] Librarian Appointed in 2002 Mrs. Seyfert received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Beaver College. Melody Sharpe [E-mail] Upper School English Teacher Appointed in 2005 Mrs. Sharpe received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Education from University of South Florida and a Master of Arts Degree in English from The Citadel. She taught middle school and high school in Florida and North Carolina prior to coming to CCS. Mrs. Sharpe began teaching in 1985, is certified to teach in both North Carolina and South Carolina, and is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Valerie Shears [E-mail] Art Teacher Appointed in 2001 Mrs. Shears earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from the College of St. Rose. J. Robert (Bob) Shirley [E-mail] Head of School Appointed in 2005 Dr. Shirley, the respected retired head of Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, became Head of School in June 2005. Highlights of Dr. Shirley’s tenure at Heathwood Hall include national recognition as one of the first sixty Exemplary Schools in the nation in 1983 and National Blue Ribbon School Awards in 1995 and 1996. He instituted a critical thinking program for all grades, outdoor leadership development course, raised funding for new buildings, enhanced athletic facilities and school grounds. In the spring of 2000, State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum presented Dr. Shirley with the Order of the Silver Crescent Award for his work in education, especially in public schools. With a career in teaching and administration, Dr. Shirley, a native of Greenville and now a resident of Seabrook Island, earned a bachelor’s degree from Furman and master’s degree from Wake Forest, both in English. His Ph.D. in Educational Administration is from the University of South Carolina. Letitia Sowers [E-mail] Lower & Middle School Physical Education Teacher; Coach Appointed in 2007 Ms. Sowers received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a Concentration in Health Promotion from the College of Charleston in 2007. She is new to the Physical Education Field. Jenni Stewart [E-mail] Middle School History Teacher Appointed in 2000 Mrs. Stewart received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of Charleston and a Master of Arts in Teaching from The Citadel. Colleen Tully [E-mail] Learning Center Director Appointed in 2004 Ms. Tully is the Director of the Learning Support Center for Lower, Middle, and Upper School students. Ms. Tully was the Coordinator of Tutoring at Life Management Center for three years. Prior to that, she taught for five years in Maryland. She earned her Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Special Education from Hood College, and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Salisbury State University in Maryland. She started The Learning Center at CCS three years ago. Candace Vaughan [E-mail] Middle School English Teacher; Upper School Journalism Teacher Appointed in 2005 Ms. Vaughan teaches Middle School English. She earned a Masters in Teaching in English from The Citadel and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before coming to CCS, Ms. Vaughan taught in North Charleston. Allison Venables [E-mail] Upper School Math Teacher; Testing Specialist Appointed in 2007 Ms. Venables received her Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Mathematics from the University of South Carolina in 1989 and her Bachelor of Science in Sociology from USC in 1986. From 2005 to joining Charleston Collegiate, she was employed at Episcopal Collegiate School in Arkansas as the Director of Testing and the Math Department Chair. She has worked in the Education Field since 1989. Lauren Vicars [E-mail] 3rd Grade Teacher; Cheerleading Coach Appointed in 2006 Mrs. Vicars received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from Wofford College. Prior to joining the faculty at CCS, she taught at Archibald Rutledge Academy in McClellanville, the Early Education Center at Ashley Hall, Spartanburg Day School, and Gateway Academy in Mt. Pleasant. Erica Woodward [E-mail] 12th Grade English; Assistant to Head of School Appointed in 2007 Mrs. Woodward received her Master of Arts in English Literature with a concentration in Pre-1660 British Literature from the University of South Carolina in 2006 and her Bachelor of Arts in English and French Languages and Literatures from Wofford College in 2003, where she graduated Cum laude. Her previous experience includes teaching American Literature at USC as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and College Prep English at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach. She has been working at Charleston Collegiate since April of 2007 as Assistant to the Headmaster, a position she will continue to fill. |
