From the Assistant Head

Charleston Collegiate School is a unique place for children to grow and learn. In addition to having a caring and intellectually dedicated faculty, the peaceful rural beauty and great diversity provide a special learning environment. Our goal is to encourage students to inquire, to analyze information from multiple perspectives, and to apply their learning to new situations. Charleston Collegiate teachers tend to be nurturing and optimistic people, who believe that if challenged, children will meet high standards. The faculty places tremendous emphasis on the development of good writing skills and solid analytical thinking. The result is that we graduate students who are independent thinkers and will participate out in the world as lifelong learners.

An exciting component of our curriculum is the Exhibition of Mastery program, which requires all graduating seniors to demonstrate their abilities to analyze, interpret, compare and contrast, collect data, apply their knowledge to real world experiences, and justify their results. The stepping stones to this twelfth grade exhibition are laid as early as our K-4 program and build the foundation for children’s success as adults. In K-4, students apply hands-on learning as they explore the differences between liquids and solids. The fifth grade trip to the mountains of North Carolina and the Middle School study of the surrounding John’s Island ecosystems further develop these intellectual skills. Because of our size, we are able to offer a curriculum that integrates the fine arts, athletics, community service, and social activities with academic demands.

An equally important component of our program is our dedication to produce caring individuals of integrity. We expect students to be respectful, productive community members; we treat them with equal respect and provide them with many opportunities to participate in activities that enable them to reach out to those less fortunate. These experiences give our students an appreciation and compassion for real world diversity found both on and off campus. Charleston Collegiate values the whole child and strives to provide the guidance necessary to promote academic, social, and emotional success. Because we recognize the importance of balancing the relationship among all three of these areas, we have outstanding guidance and learning centers that address these needs.

The demands and responsibilities of a Charleston Collegiate education also offer the rewards of companionship and fun. Spend a few moments watching the determined expressions on the faces of students at work and at play, and you will get a glimpse of the future of the world. We invite you to come and visit our beautiful campus and witness first-hand our commitment to all aspects of a student’s growth and education.
